Yellowknifer wins $3,000 local shopping spree

A Yellowknife woman is $3,000 richer this Christmas after shopping at local stores.

Beth Stewart was the lucky name out of the hat as the #ShopYK Passport promotion closed on Wednesday.

During the campaign, residents earned a stamp in their shopping passport for every $20 spent at any of 43 participating local stores.

Every 30 stamps collected could be converted into an entry for the grand prize draw. The $3,000 prize must also be spent locally.

The initiative was run by the City of Yellowknife and the Yellowknife Chamber of Commerce. According to the chamber, completed passports accounted for more than $850,000 in spending at local businesses.

“We think it has had a pretty substantial impact,” said the chamber’s executive director, Deneen Everett.

“There’s an educational component about encouraging consumers to support local businesses. And the second part is that consumers had an incentive, in the prize draw, to support those businesses.”

Stewart’s name was drawn from 1,418 entrants.
