Dettah Ice Road closed to all traffic for the season

Yellowknife, NWT – Do not take vehicles out on the Dettah Ice Road.
That word from the GNWT’s Department of Transportation Tuesday.
Communications Manager Earl Blacklock says it’s not an advisory.
He says the road was closed by law for the season Monday afternoon.
“We aren’t doing this capriciously, it’s something that needs to be done and people have to recognize that the people who make the decisions from the department have a great deal of experience in operating these roads safely.”
Blacklock says the law is not the only reason drivers shouldn’t be out on the ice road.
“That was the factor that influenced the timing but anytime that we close the road it takes into account all of the factors including whether the road can sustain traffic and do so safely.”
Blacklock says if you have property out on the lake, like ice fishing huts or nets, you should retrieve them on foot or snowmobile and use extreme caution.
