Range Lake MLA wants more communication with clinic closures

Yellowknife, NWT – The MLA for Range Lake says the public should’ve been informed about the temporary closure of the two medical clinics in Yellowknife.

Both the Frame Lake Clinic and the primary clinic downtown were closed last Thursday afternoon, on Saturday and will be again Tuesday morning.

Daryl Dolynny says Health Minister Glen Abernethy told him in an email the closure of the clinics is due to the integration of Yellowknife and Hay River on to the Electronic Medical Record System.

Dolynny has no problem with that but says the public should’ve been informed.

“If we need to do upgrades and updates to electronic medical records that’s fine because it’s part of doing business, but from a communication standpoint I think this was a miss by the department.”

Dolynny says the closure also puts extra pressure on the emergency room staff at Stanton Hospital on a long weekend.

He thinks the public deserves a head-up.

“We are dealing with a newer health minister who has said he’ll do things differently and one of those things is communication, so the disappointment here is the fact that this close was not communicated at all to the residents of Yellowknife and Hay River.”

Health officials say no appointments at the clinics had to be cancelled and emergency services were always available at Stanton.
