NWT athletics gets big financial boost

Yellowknife, NWT – The federal government and the GNWT have taken a step forward in advancing sport development and participation across the territory’s communities.

The Feds and the territorial government signed a three-year agreement on Monday at Yellowknife’s William McDonald Middle School that will see over $1.8 million injected into NWT athletics.

The Federal Minister of State for Sport is Bal Gasol.

“I think this bilateral agreement that we signed with the Northwest Territories will create the tools needed to get kids more and more involved with sports and physical activity.”

The GNWT’s Minister of Municipal and Community Affairs, Robert C. McLeod, says the agreement bodes well for the future of sport in the territory.

“You look at some of our athletes competing on the world stage that started in small communities and at the Arctic Winter Games. I am excited about it because we have a really good support system in place for our athletes and I think more support will ensure that our kids can compete at the national level and do well.”

The signing was accompanied with a demonstration of traditional Dene and Inuit Games by students.
