Hay River murder charge against Lori Roberta Hansen stayed

Lori Roberta Hansen no longer faces a murder charge over the death of a woman in Hay River in April.

Earlier this week, a Hay River court stayed the charge. That means the prosecution against her has been discontinued.

Within a year of a charge being stayed, the Crown is technically entitled to revive proceedings and prosecute on the same charge again.

However, in a statement on Wednesday, RCMP said: “RCMP and the Public Prosecution Service of Canada consider the matter closed.”

Hansen, 41 at the time of her arrest, was initially charged with second degree murder over the death of Roberta Sabourin, 42, in Hay River’s highrise on April 8.

Background: Remembering Roberta Sabourin

No explanation for the staying of the charge has been provided.

“A complete and thorough investigation was conducted by the RCMP resulting in criminal charges being laid,” read Wednesday’s police statement, which did not elaborate on what had since changed.
