First annual Ice Fishing Day held this weekend

Yellowknife, NWT – Fishing and fun are the themes for Saturday’s first annual Family Ice Fishing Day on Kam Lake in Yellowknife.

The event is being put on by a number of groups including the NWT Wildlife Federation and the Fly Kid Foundation.

Former Yellowknife Mayor and foundation chair, Gord Van Tighem, explains the event.

“Tomorrow from 1 to 5pm we’re inviting families to bring the kids out for an introduction to ice fishing and an opportunity to get outdoors. Hopefully there’s some sunshine but it certainly has been warmer recently so it should be an interesting day.”

Van Tighem says the event is open to all ages and admission is free.

He encourages those interested to bundle up, but adds they won’t be travelling too far.

“There are a few secret spots that have been selected and some holes that are being drilled but it’s not going to be a great epic journey.”

Van Tighem says they will primarily be targeting pike, pickerel and whitefish and that all fish will be released.

Anyone interested should drop by the Kam Lake boat launch between 1 and 5pm.
