Yellowknife residents made statements of intent at events across the city as the 2015 holiday season began.
On Saturday, hundreds of locals attended Sir John Franklin High School for a fundraiser in aid of Syrian refugees.
Organizers said more than $15,000 had been raised to support the cause. The dinner also featured a presentation from Yellowknife-based journalist Cody Punter, who spent months reporting on the plight of refugees making their way through nations across Europe.
On the same day, the YK Cares organization raised more than $6,000 toward providing food for those in need this Christmas – while Moose FM’s annual Stuff the Bus food drive saw residents purchase more than 550 food parcels at the Yellowknife Co-op for delivery to the YK Food Bank.
On Sunday, City Hall turned red in partnership with the YWCA to recognize the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence against Women.
The City of Yellowknife joined other municipalities and government buildings across Canada in switching to red illumination for the evening, following a vigil held at Northern United Place.
