City of Yellowknife celebrates volunteers

Yellowknife, NWT – The city of Yellowknife will be celebrating community volunteers this Sunday with a barbeque at the Multiplex.

The public event will also feature a performance by the Fiddle Cats, Yellowknife’s youth fiddle group.

The city’s Special Events Coordinator Sandra Nielsen explains why the city is putting on the event.

“Approximately nine community groups have signed up to recognize some of their own volunteers so the city wanted to provide a venue for organizations that might not have the capacity to run a formal thank you to their volunteers. We wanted to provide a venue for them to do that.”

Nielsen says this is the first time the city recognizes volunteers on this scale.

She explains this year’s theme of “Seeds of Yellowknife”.

“Without seeds plants can’t grow and without our volunteers our community would not prosper as well as it does. So many organizations and services across the city rely heavily on volunteers.”

The event runs from 2:30 to 4:30 in the afternoon.

Admission is free.
