NTPC’s new site to shed light on power outages

Yellowknife, NWT – It appears the days of being left in the dark about power outages may be over for some Northerners.

The communications manager, Pam Coulter, with the Northwest Territories Power Corporation says they’ve launched a new client-focused website and social media accounts.

Coulter explains how the NTPC’s new digital presence will help when the power goes out.

“When people visit the site on the right hand side there is a whole section called outages. If you click on that it will list all of the unplanned outages that are happening right there and you can click on it for more information. You can also click on it to find out if there are planned outages. What we do ask is if the power goes out and they have access to a smart phone that they check if it’s not just a planned outage.”

Coulter says December’s three hour plus blackout in Yellowknife, Dettah and Behchoko in minus 40 temperatures played a role in the upgrades.

“We released we were not doing a good enough job in communicating with our customers and they let us know that. This was in response to that and the outage section in particular was a result of that. We knew we needed to do better and this gave us an opportunity to put something in place to keep customers up to date with information that they want to know.”

Unless residents have a smartphone, a generator or a battery operated computer, they will have to tune to CJCD Mix 100 for the latest information during NTPC blackouts.
