Man falls through ice near Co-op underpass on Frame Lake

Yellowknife, NWT – We told you Tuesday about how the city of Yellowknife was warning residents about thin ice on Frame Lake near the Co-Op underpass.

Today, we know why they issued that warning.

A man fell through the ice Sunday morning.

The city’s Public Safety Director is Dennis Marchiori.

“The Fire Division did respond to an individual who thought he had fallen through the ice. We weren’t sure at the time if he had gone through the actual ice layer or gone into the overflow but in any situation the water can be deep in that area.”

Yellowknife Fire Chief Darcy Hernblad says the man was able to pull himself out with the help from some friends, before emergency crews arrived.

He says the man was wet and cold but did not sustain any serious injuries although he did go to hospital as a precaution.

Hernblad has this warning for residents.

“At this time of year we ask everyone to be cautious with the ice. Make sure you’re aware of your surroundings, look around you and if the ice doesn’t look right stay away from those areas. This isn’t just for the area around the Co-op, there are all kinds of areas around town like this.”

Residents who travel along the lake or on Airport Road may have already noticed more warning signs and barricades in the area.

Hernblad says even though temperatures haven’t been spring-like, increased sunlight will still begin melting ice.
