Environment Canada has issued snowfall warnings for Yellowknife and Hay River on Thursday afternoon.
The weather agency says as much as 20 cm of snow could fall in both communities in the next 24 hours.
The snow is expected to last 18 to 24 hours. Warnings are issued whenever 10cm or more is expected to fall in 12 hours or less.
Environment Canada says heavy snow will begin Thursday night in Fort Liard and Fort Simpson before moving eastward into regions around Great Slave Lake overnight.
“Rapidly accumulating snow could make travel difficult over some locations,” according to the forecast issued on Thursday afternoon.
“Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow.”
